What DANE is
The Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística (DANE) is the agency responsible for planning, collecting, processing, analyzing and publishing Colombia's official statistics.
It maintains DIVIPOLA, the official coding of departments, municipalities, non-municipalized areas and populated centers, and produces the vital statistics on births and deaths.
A clinic's health staff complete the birth and death certificates in RUAF-ND that DANE processes into vital statistics, and DIVIPOLA gives the clinic the official municipality codes.
In 2025, Colombia recorded 441,537 births (2.7% fewer than in 2024) and 284,254 non-fetal deaths (3.1% more), according to final figures.

The DANE code of every municipality
DANE gives every Colombian municipality a five-digit code, the DIVIPOLA: the first two digits are the department and the next three, the municipality. It is the code RIPS and other health-sector reports use for the patient's municipality of residence.
